Alaska Airlines launches subscription service

Alaska Airlines is introducing a new subscription service called Alaska Access. This new subscription offers its members exclusive benefits such as early access to deals, a monthly wifi voucher, and a personalized fare page. The subscription costs $60 a year paid monthly ($5 a month). Members will gain access to any Alaska Airlines fare sales one day early. The wifi voucher does not roll over and will come in the form of a single-use promo code that arrives in your email every month.

My thoughts

In its current form, I do not see this subscription being that enticing even for frequent Alaska Airlines flyers. The deal early access does not seem that beneficial, especially considering you could get a yearly subscription to Going.com for the same price. The wifi voucher might be worthwhile if you fly Alaska at least once a month and expect to purchase internet on every flight. Even then, it might make sense to switch your cell carrier to T-mobile which has plans that include free wifi on Alaska, United, and some Delta and American Airlines flights.

I’d be curious to know if Alaska plans to expand this progress with additional perks. A quarterly or yearly lounge voucher would be an enticing addition to the subscription. A point multiplier might also be an interesting idea.
