This past weekend, my girlfriend and I decided to go to a local farm in Irvine for their strawberry festival and tour. They have a collaboration with Sanrio which I think is a perfect way to attract families and educate them about fruits and vegetables that are grown here. I only knew about this from one of my cousin who took their little daughter for a day of strawberry picking which I really enjoyed doing when I was young.
I got there a little before 9:30 just in time for the first tour which was better than any fruit/vegetable picking farm I’ve been to. The thing that I really enjoyed about this tour was how they geared their attention to children by having them touch, see and taste the fruits and vegetables in their natural state. There were several stops throughout the tour where the guide would bring out 2-3 vegetables/fruits for everyone to try out. By introducing new fruits/vegetables to children at a young age, it will hopefully get them to have a positive outlook on fruits and vegetables and how nutritious they are to include them in their meals. At the end of the tour, our guide showed us how to carefully pick a strawberry before letting us fill up our containers with strawberries. During this time, I noticed how respectful the children were when they picked their own strawberries with their parents guiding them along the way. Everyone seemed like they had a great time and wanted to pick more strawberries by the end of the tour.
This is an activity that I encourage everyone to go out and experience. If you are in California definitely check out Tanaka Farms in Irvine. Strawberry picking will be going on until July. After July, it will be watermelon tours until August.
